Man accused of trafficking stolen weapons

Authorities have accused an Iowa City man of illegal possession of and trafficking weapons.

Dante Beard, 25, 648 S. Dodge St., was charged Aug. 17 with control of firearms by a felon and first-offense trafficking in stolen weapons.

According to the arrest affidavit, detectives made a traffic stop with Beard’s vehicle and had a warrant to search the vehicle, which had expired registration. Detectives reportedly also knew Beard was wanted on other chargers.

When taken into custody, the affidavit said, Beard admitted to police that he had a gun in his vehicle and said he was a felon. He told officers the gun was stolen, the affidavit said, but he couldn’t recall whose gun it was.

The serial number on the gun was checked and found to be stolen from Merrillville, Indiana, the affidavit said.

Beard was convicted of a felony in Indiana on Aug. 27, 2015.

Control of firearms by a felon and first-offense trafficking in stolen weapons are Class-D felonies.
