CHICAGO – Nebraska head coach Scott Frost is familiar with the College Football Playoffs.

In his second season at Central Florida, Frost’s squad finished 13-0 but wasn’t in the conversation for the College Football Playoffs. The Knights took down No. 7 Auburn in the Peach Bowl, proving that they can hang with some of the nation’s best teams.

The playoff system is a four-team affair, which means not every Power 5 conference (Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12, ACC) champion makes the playoffs, and there are no guarantees a non-Power 5 program makes the cut, either, as Frost knows.

Frost addressed the current playoff format on July 23 in Chicago during Big Ten media days, saying he wants to see the playoffs expand from four to eight teams.

“But it’s hard to look at last year’s college football season and not feel like an eight-team playoff isn’t where we should go. I think that’s my opinion,” Frost said. “I think it should be five conference champions and three at-large teams. That would give a surprise conference champion that plays well at the end of the season a shot. It might give a team like we had at [Central Florida] last year a shot.
