Iowa City City Councilor Kingsley Botchway has been chosen for a position in the Waterloo School District.

According to the Waterloo district’s social-media pages, Botchway has been named its chief officer of human resources and equity. Currently, aside from serving as a city councilor, Botchway is the Iowa City School District director of equity and engagement.

First elected in 2014, Botchway is a two-term councilor who started his second term in January.

The Waterloo position is still pending approval from that School Board, Botchway said, and the process should be completed on July 15. Until then, he said, he is not making any decision about leaving Iowa City.

“When that time comes, I’ll be sure to share my thoughts, feelings about Iowa City,” Botchway said.

City Attorney Eleanor Dilkes said in an email to The Daily Iowan if Botchway were to resign from the City Council, the council would decide whether to fill the vacancy by appointment or by calling for a special election.

If the council decides to fill the seat by appointment, residents have the right to request a special election by filing a petition.
