The Iowa Athletics Department and the National Iowa Varsity Club have announced 2018’s Hall of Fame class, adding eight elite members of the Hawkeye community.

The class of 2018 features Sarah Lynch, Alexis Maday, Kineke Alexander, Jared DeVries, Chris Hatcher, Jeff McGinness, Bob Sanders, and John Streif. To become eligible for the Athletics Hall of Fame, athletes must have at least one varsity letter award and meet the eligibilities of 10 years for athletes and five for coaches/administrators.

The induction ceremony is set to take place Aug. 31 the night before the Hawkeye football team’s season-opener against Northern Illinois. The ceremony and reception is open to the public; people may purchase tickets for $20.

The three women to be inducted are Lynch (soccer) Maday (gymnastics), and Alexander (track and field).

Lynch’s time at Iowa was hall-worthy; she became the all-time leader in goals (36) and shares the school record with 112 points. She was also first-team All-Big Ten from 1999-2001.

Maday of women’s gymnastics holds three school records — in the all-around, uneven bars, and floor exercise — while receiving three All-American honors from 2002-2004. In 2004, she was also named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year.

Alexander of track and field was an eight-time All-American from 2005-08, the most of any Hawkeye athlete. In 2007, she was named as Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year in 2007, along with Iowa Female Athlete of the Year in 2006-07.

Looking at the men, Sanders was a first-team All-Big Ten safety from 2001-2003 and second-team All-American in 2003. He helped the Hawkeyes capture the Big Ten title in 2002 and wins at the 2001 Alamo Bowl and 2004 Outback Bowl. Sanders went on to have eight-year career in NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers, winning a Super Bowl with the Colts in 2007.

DeVries, also a Hawkeye football player, was a All-American in 1998 and made first-team All-Big Ten. He holds three Iowa football records with most tackles-for-loss in a season (22) and career (78) and total sacks (42). At the 1995 Sun Bowl and 1996 Alamo Bowl, Devries received MVP honors.

Hatcher of the Iowa baseball program was a 1989 All-American and first-time All-Big Ten honoree twice, in 1989 and 1990. He was a part of the Hawkeye 1990 Big Ten championship team that went to the NCAA regionals that year.

McGinness, a wrestler for the Hawkeyes from 1994-1998, won two national championships and three Big Ten titles while earning All-American honors in 1994, 1995, and 1998. His historic career peaked when he won 43-consecutive matches and was Iowa’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winner.

Athletics trainer Streif was selected to this year’s class after serving 40 years as a trainer and as an athletics travel coordinator for 32 years. In 2008, Streif won the Hall of Honor Award from the Iowa Athletics Trainers Society and PRO-CATS Quality of Life Award, given by the College Athletics Trainers Society.
