A North Liberty woman has been accused of theft and forgery.

Authorities have taken Sharolyn Evans-Robi, 70, into custody and charged her with first-degree theft and forgery after she allegedly forged the signature of a person to take possession of the person’s car. On July 3, 2017, Evans-Robi’s husband showed up to Carousel Motors in Iowa City with the vehicle and told employees he had purchased the car without keys and asked them to make him keys, according to the arrest affidavit. The employees refused because he was not the registered owner, the affidavit said.

On July 7, 2017, the man returned to Carousel with the car and his wife, Evans-Robi, who now owned the car, according to the title, the affidavit said. Carousel made the keys and later reported the incident to police as suspicious. The owner of the vehicle told police he did not sell the car and did not know Evans-Robi or her husband. The affidavit said the defendants admitted to police they had a towing company unlock the car to retrieve the title and registration and then tow it to Carousel, and later they forged the victim’s signature on the title to register the vehicle to Evans-Robi. The pair told police they thought the car had been abandoned, the affidavit said, but they confirmed they did not buy the car nor did they have permission to take it.

First-degree theft is a Class-C felony, and forgery is a Class-D felony.
