On Feb. 7, a jury in Polk County found 24-year-old Lamar Wilson guilty of voluntary manslaughter, two counts of assault with the intent to inflict serious injury, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon, the Des Moines Register reported from the courtroom.
Kaleek Jones, a 22-year-old father of two from Iowa City, died of wounds sustained from the Aug. 27 Pedestrian Mall shooting in which Wilson was the shooter. Two others were wounded.
Prosecutors asked the jury to find Wilson guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon following the events that took place on Aug. 27, 2017, on the Ped Mall.
The trial began Jan. 22, and the jury heard closing arguments on Feb. 2.
Voluntary manslaughter is a lesser offense in the court system. A gang participation charge will be tried separately.
