A University of Iowa associate professor has been accused of domestic abuse and a warrant is out for his arrest.

Horacio F. Olivo-Hernandez, 55, is suspected of domestic abuse/assault occurring Jan. 18.

Olivo is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics within the division of medicinal and natural products chemistry.

The Daily Iowan confirmed Olivo’s address through a UI directory search, matching it with the address given on the Iowa City Police Department’s blotter.

According to the affidavit, the victim has been married to Olivo-Hernandez for a year and a half.

Olivo-Hernandez allegedly has belittled the victim, making fun of her job, English-speaking skills, and her 17-year-old daughter, the affidavit said. He also took the victim’s citizenship and identity papers away from her, the affidavit said, which were later recovered by University of Iowa Police officers.

On Jan. 18, the affidavit said, Olivo-Hernandez grabbed the victim by her right arm, causing pain. He also shook her, head-butted her, and told her she “had no idea who she was messing with,” the affidavit said.

Olivo-Hernandez later texted the victim, saying “This time you went too far,” the affidavit said, which prompted the victim and her daughter to move out of their residence.

Domestic abuse/assault is a serious misdemeanor.
