Iowa records another W in the Cy-Hawk series

The Hawkeye women finished out the fall half of the season against the Cyclones.

The Iowa women’s swimming and diving team won 12 of 16 events against Iowa State on Dec. 8 to take home its eighth-straight Cy-Hawk Series victory, 172.5-127.5.

Iowa jumped out to an early 11-6 lead after the first event, with a 200-medley relay finish at 1:42.06 by senior Meghan Lavelle, freshman Sage Ohlensehlen, and sophomores Meghan Hackett and Samantha Sauer.

Sophomore Hannah Burvill took home the victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.91. With that, she beat the previous pool record of 1:48.38. Burvill also took home a win in the 100 freestyle.

Lavelle took home her second victory of the night — her first individual — in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 54.43. Her second individual win came in the 200 backstroke.

Freshman Kelsey Drake finished the 200 butterfly in 1:59.99 to win, beating the previous ISU record. Drake also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.46.

In the 100 butterfly, junior Kelly McNamara won, touching in at 54.55. In the 200 breaststroke, senior Shea Hoyt recorded a 2:14.22 for first place, more than four seconds better than her opponents.

In the diving well, Jacintha Thomas took home wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.

Iowa finished the meet with a win in the 400-freestyle relay. Senior Lauren Leehy, Jekel, Mekenna Scheitlin, and Burvill raced better than one second faster than their opponents, touching in at 3:23.06.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Jan. 12-13, facing Illinois (women) and Notre Dame (men and women).
