Iowa City business sustains $1 million in damage from late-night blaze

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at approximately 11:31 p.m. Oct. 7 at 1018 Walnut St., the site of Randall Electric Inc.

An initial crew of 16 firefighters arrived to find significant smoke and fire at the rear of the building, according to a press release. Crews were impeded by structural collapses and associated instability in their attempts to bring the fire under control.

The release states Iowa City firefighters were assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, MidAmerican Energy and fire departments from the surrounding area.

Officials estimate the total loss of the building at $1 million.

Officials told The Daily Iowan Sunday that no one was in the building when the fire started.

The cause of the fire is still to be determined as of Sunday morning, the release states. It is under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal and the Iowa City police.
