Hawkeyes tab Stanley as starter

Iowa football decided on its starting quarterback.

Nathan Stanley, a sophomore from Menomonie, Wisconsin, will be the signal caller heading the Hawkeye offense on Saturday, when the team plays Wyoming in the season-opener.

In limited action last season, Stanley finished 5-for-9 for 62 yards.

Junior Tyler Wiegers, the other passer in the mix, did not see action in 2016. In 2015, the Lake Orion, Michigan, native completed 3-of-4 passes for 32 yards.

Neither quarterback has started at any point in his Hawkeye career.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz indicated during media availability on Aug. 22 that he would name a starter on the Aug. 28, and he proved true to his word.

Kickoff for the Hawkeyes’ inaugural game against the Cowboys is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday.
