Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz spoke to members of the media at the Big Ten Media Days to discuss the upcoming 2017-2018 season.
  • Ferentz said inexperience and weakness is on the perimeter, both on the offensive and defensive side. Also mentioned kicking competition and kick return — will miss Desmond King.
  • “We’re eager to get going.” Practice will start July 30.
  • On passing of Bobby Elliott: “In my mind we lost.. one of the best coaches who ever coached.”
  • There are two starting tight ends on the first depth chart. This is to “accentuate the positive.” But, “depth charts are meaningless,” according to Ferentz.
  • Sean Welsh recently posted an Op-Ed on his battle with depression: “It speaks volumes… of the courageous young man he is… I really commend him for wanting to come forward. It’s in the spirit of wanting to help others.”
  • “I’m trying to figure out who scheduled that game, actually.” Ferentz, on the season opener against Wyoming.
  • Ferentz thinks Akrum Wadley’s thoughts of joining the NFL were “premature.” To Ferentz, Wadley’s turning point was 2015 when the team was without LeShun Daniels and Jordan Canzeri went down. “He’s poised to have a tremendous year… I’m thrilled he’s on our football team.”
  • Drake Kulick is expected to be full speed on the first day of camp. Kulick injured his leg in the last game of the 2016 season. “People don’t appreciate just how difficult it is to come back from an injury.”
