Adopting animals for the holidays

The holiday season is a popular time to adopt pets but Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center officials say the winter time can affect the animals.

“When it does get deep freezing and cold, those animals, outdoor animals, will hunker down and they’re not moving around as much and they’re not breeding so that does slow the breeding season down,” said Liz Ford, supervisor of the Iowa City Animal Adoption Center.

The center houses over 100 animals, which consists of about 80 percent cats.

This cold holiday season, the shelter is asking the community to consider adopting their animals, so they can make space for more animals. The process benefits both families and pets that may need a home.

“It’s a wonderful time to add a family pet and it just makes the holidays all that more special when you open up your home to an animal that’s homeless,” Ford said.
