Iowa racks up 33 bonus points en-route to four victories at the Iowa City Duals.

The Hawkeye wrestling team competed in four-straight dual meets on Nov. 20 at the Iowa City Duals and won each of them.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise — of the four teams Iowa faced, one was a transitory NCAA program, one was a Juco school and one was Division 3 — but winning those duals by a combined 192-9 is not something to ignore.

Iowa also got its first Big Ten win of the season — a 36-9 win over Maryland — and the Hawkeyes are now 5-0 in dual meets during this young season.

“There are two reasons you [have this kind of an event],” Iowa head coach Tom Brands said. “For the guys who are veterans, they get their feet a little wet, you get a bunch of matches in, and that’s good. The other reason you do it is to see where your young guys are. You can learn a lot about them.”

Twelve different wrestlers saw action during the dual, including four redshirt freshman — Logan Ryan (141), Skyler St. John (157), Burke Paddock (165), and Sam Stoll (285). They went a combined 7-2, with Stoll also picking up a forfeit win.

There is, of course, plenty still to do for Iowa as heads into a stretch in which they wrestle Iowa State, South Dakota State, and Rutgers. None of those teams look, on paper, as if they should give the Hawkeyes much trouble, but one of the team’s takeaways from today’s meet was to avoid overlooking anyone.

“I think a big thing from today is that no matter who we’re going out there to wrestle, we have to be ready,” Nathan Burak said. “When you’re a high-ranked team, no matter if they’re a small school or big school, they have nothing to lose wrestling you, and they want to take something away from you.”

Despite Burak’s words, however, Iowa managed to put up 33 bonus-point victories, and things never were close in the majority of the team’s matches. However, the Hawkeyes did drop the 141, 157, and 165 matches against Maryland — their only losses of the day — which has to be a tad worrisome.

All three of the matches they lost were close — and it’s still incredibly early — but there are a few question marks.

“I think we came out a little slow,” Sammy Brooks said. “But guys are going to hold on to us, try to make things look close because they know they’re not, maybe, as good of wrestlers as what we are. We needed to realize that sooner, so I think this was good for that.”
