College-aged students historically have the lowest voter turnout rates, and that could be because of a lack of political awareness.

“Generally speaking, college students are not as aware about what is going on politically as middle-aged folks,” said Cary Covington, a political science associate professor at the University of Iowa.

Only 38 percent of 18-24 year olds showed up to vote in the 2012 election.
