The Iowa football team beat North Texas 62-16.

North Texas coach Dan McCarney (ex-Hawk player and assistant coach, born in Iowa City) didn’t have a very good homecoming in Iowa City. Neither did Iowa City native and North Texas quarterback Andrew McNulty. In fact, all of the Mean Green — especially their defense — looked as if they never did wake up on the morning of Sept. 26. North Texas gave up 488 total yards and could do little to stop anything the Hawkeyes wanted to do.
Iowa’s starting offense looked solid, with quarterback C.J. Beathard posting a ridiculous line of 18-of-21, 278 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
We’ll have a bit more later, but here are a few stray observations:
- Running back Jordan Canzeri finished with 4 touchdowns, which leads the Big Ten as of this post. He also tied the record for most rushing touchdowns in a game.
- Iowa’s second-string played most of the fourth quarter, with mixed results. The defense looked fairly solid, but the offense had some bad moments — especially on its first drive. However, a big Derrick Mitchell Jr. run (45 yards) gave the Hawks a little bit of a boost.
- Beathard and backup Tyler Wiegers completed passes to eight different receivers today.
- The starting defense still had its bad moments. North Texas’ first drive in the second half made the Iowa rushing defense look a bit silly.
- The Beathard to Tevaun Smith connection was very productive (more on this later).
- Last, Marshall Koehn somehow missed an extra point. It broke a streak of 185-straight made extra points.
