Metcalf takes silver

Former Iowa standout Brent Metcalf won a silver medal at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix on Jan. 24, a tournament that has consistently drawn some of the best wrestling talent from around the world.

Medcalf opened the tournament by rattling off four-straight wins — including two technical falls — to put him in the finals against Russia’s Ilyas Bekbulatov. He he lost that match, 8-6.

“Brent wrestled a great tournament all the way through finishing with the silver medal,” assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick said in a release. “He was very effective offensively and continues to improve where he needs. Of course, he wants the gold; however, he is very close to being where he wants to be.”

The second-place finish was Metcalf’s second career medal from the Yarygin Grand Prix tournament; he took silver during the 2013 tournament.

Metcalf had an impressive Iowa career, winning two NCAA and Big Ten titles while compiling a record of 108-3 in his three seasons as a Hawkeye.
